A visualization of the Levitating Dipole Experiment at MIT's Plasma Science Fusion Center. In this experiment, a superconducting coil is levitated by magnetic fields. The animation shows the following sequence. At the beginning, the superconducting (green) coil has already been "charged", so that there is a superconducting current in that coil that does not dissipate with time. The coil is then lifted mechanically to the middle of the containment vessel. Currents are then induced in coils at the top of that vessel so as to levitate the coil and support it. The mechanical launcher is then withdrawn, and the support is now entirely magnetic. Then plasma is introduced onto the closed magnetic lines of the levitating coil.
